The Ministry of National Defence, through Decree-Law No. 33/2009, of 5 February, established the extinction of Arsenal do Alfeite, with a view to its commercialisation.
It then succeeds Arsenal do Alfeite, S.A. constituted in the form of a anonymous company, with exclusively public capital, which includes IdD – Portugal Defence, whose mission assigned within the scope of the National Defense Economy, manages public holdings in the defense sector, enabling effective autonomy and ability to comply of the missions of the Armed Forces, in addition to promoting the development of clusters in the areas of shipbuilding and repair, communications, advanced simulation and training systems and the aerospace sector, in its internationalization aspect.
Arsenal do Alfeite, S.A. starts its activity on the 1st of September 2009, having in its genesis the need to create a reference entity in the naval industry, both nationally and internationally, imposed by the technological evolution of this sector.
This company comprises an area of 36 hectares of implantation encompassed by the Lisbon Naval Base, which is located on the south bank of the Tagus River. It is mainly dedicated to satisfying the naval construction, maintenance and repair needs of the Portuguese Navy, other Nato and commercial navies, using advanced technologies, namely, in the areas of electronics, optronics, armaments, mechanics and electrotechnics.
It also has a quality management system, certified according to the ISO 9001:2015 standard, and a set of testing and calibration laboratories accredited by the Portuguese Institute of Accreditation, according to the NP EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard. It is also important to highlight its capacity in the area of studies and projects of new vessels, modifications and conversions, as well as in consultancy and provision of specialized industrial services.
